  • Notes
    • Marian was born on April 27, 1924 to Chris and Minnie (Stensen) Koch in Onida, South Dakota. She spent her childhood in Sully County and helped raise her brothers and sisters in Onida and Gettysburg. She was the fourth child of nine other siblings, and the first girl, so she worked hard and helped her mother tremendously. She later married Doyle Johnson, Gettysburg, on April 2, 1945 in Pierre, South Dakota.

Marian spent most of her life working at home caring for her two children and helping with the farm, but she also worked at the Oahe Manor from 1968-1979. She was an active member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church and the Medicine Rock Senior Citizens.

For the past 12 years, Marian was a resident at the Oahe Manor, where she developed friendships with residents and staff who appreciated her uplifting spirit.

Marian is survived by her children: Burton Johnson, Sioux Falls, and Roger Johnson, Rogers, MN; four grandchildren: Kristi (Kevin Whaley) Johnson, Kari, Brandi, and Trish Johnson; siblings: Martha Weischedel, Brookings, SD, Emma (Dan) Schramm, Denver, CO, and Richard Koch, Camano Island, WA; daughters-in-law: Clara Johnson, Sioux Falls and Cleo (Rik) Groves, Maple Grove, MN; and special friend, Sherri Hunter.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Minnie Koch; husband, Doyle Johnson; daughter, Beverly Johnson; and siblings: Ralph, Art, Carroll, and Leonard Koch, Pauline Dean, and Irene Mayer.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Marian’s arrangements.
